National Drinking with Chickens Day
I did a thing.
In case you missed it, YES…I went and had a national day declared (it’s a thing, you can do it on the interwebs…I have a certificate and everything). So officially…and with much ridiculous fanfare…May 23rd is now National Drinking with Chickens Day (also, for the record it is World Turtle Day, National Lucky Penny Day, and National Taffy Day).
Because I’m just this sort of extra.
National DWC Day was such a whirlwind this year that I wanted to put out a blog post summing up all the boozy chicken fun in proper internet form.
Here’s the summary:
Chickens.
Booze.
Hashtags.
Giveaways.
Parties.
Not necessarily in that order.
We were so lucky to partner with some incredible companies to make National Drinking with Chickens Day extra special. Thank you to Brite Lite Tribe for generously giving away a neon chicken sign like the one pictured above to a lucky winner!
We did a second giveaway, as well, where one lucky winner got all the DWC swag featured here (but not the chicken. Nope nope nope.).
Next year? Methinks a whole week’s worth of giveaways might just be in order.
And of course, we had to have an official National Drinking with Chickens Day celebration at DWC headquarters—for which we partnered with New Belgium to sample a fabulous collection of their products, including their newest collaborative product: Mural Agua Fresca Cerveza (GASP it’s a pink beer and I’m obsessed).
Our guests got to experience a variety of great New Belgium brews, such as Fat Tire, and Voodoo Ranger IPA, amongst others.
But the Mural (pronounced like the wall art) was the star of the day, and we even offered up a yummy Shandy cocktail to highlight the beer’s watermelon, lime, and hibiscus goodness.
MURAL SHANDY
Makes 1 serving
1 oz. hibiscus syrup (instructions below)
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 hibiscus tea bags
1 oz. fresh watermelon juice (instructions below)
1 mounded cup fresh, cubed watermelon
1 oz. fresh lime juice (just squeeze a damned lime, you don’t need instructions)
1 12 oz. can of Mural Agua Fresca Cerveza
lime wedges for garnish
To make the hibiscus syrup: in a small saucepan, bring all ingredients to a boil, stirring until sugar is fully dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Strain into an airtight container and store in fridge for up to 2 weeks.
To make the watermelon juice: place watermelon cubes in the blender and liquify. Strain through a fine mesh strainer into an airtight container and store in fridge for no more than a few days.
To make the cocktail: in a glass filled with ice, add syrup, juices, then top with Mural and give everything a quick stir. Garnish and enjoy!
Also, we played Drinking with Chickens Games…such as Rosé Pong (but you have to hold a chicken while you play), and Cornhole (but you have to hold a chicken while you play)…you get the idea.
And, of course, I wanted to see how everyone else in social media land was celebrating, so I asked to be tagged in everyone’s images. And WOW. So many amazing, hilarious photos—some of you even threw parties and I just have to say: I AM OVERWHELMED and so thrilled.
