Red, White, & Blueberries Wine Slushie

I’ve been obsessing over wine slushies lately, guys. In fact, don’t think for even one second that this will be the last one. My summer goals: brain freeze and hairs of the dogs.

Also: Fourth of July. Patriotic drinks and I are frenemies. I love them, and I hate them. I love them because: alcohol. But I hate them because usually they are comprised of Windex and Liquid Redvines and I can’t hang. I have nothing against sugar, don’t get me wrong…but I just can’t do all those sugary, neon mixes one on top of another. But it is dang hard to make a red, white, and blue drink without them.

But, I had to try. I felt it was my solemn, solemn duty.

And so here ya go: Red, White, and Blueberries Wine Slushie

To make two beverages, you’ll need:

  • 1 cup red wine (whatever kind you prefer, but more of a dry wine helps to balance the sweetness of the Lillet)
  • 1 cup sweet aperitif wine, such as Gina Mochetto
  • 2 cups sweet white wine
  • approximately 12 fresh medium sliced strawberries, plus two slices for garnish
  • approximately 1/2 cup of fresh blueberries, plus two for garnish
  • 2 oz. chilled vodka
  • some fancy patriotic drink bunting and edible flowers for garnish

First things, first: you’ve got to make your wine ice cubes to start.

Using standard ice cube trays, fill one tray up with whatever red wine floats your taste boat. We used a red blend. Now fill one whole tray with Lillet Rose. And finally, fill one tray with Lillet Blanc. Stick these in the freezer and freeze overnight.

To assemble:

Grab two mason jars in addition to your two cocktail glasses (I used rocks glasses). Prep your blender. Start by tossing all your ‘white’ cubes into the blender. (Side note: if you like a less sweet drink, sub a dry white wine for half the Lillet Blanc cubes). Blend till smoothie consistency is achieved, pour the slush into one mason jar and stick back in the freezer. Now, place half your pink cubes (6), and half your red cubes (6), and your strawberries in the blender and blend until smooth. Pour mixture into one mason jar and stick in freezer to set up a bit more. You’ll have extra pink and red cubes, but trust me, it is easier to fill one whole tray with one variety of wine than to try and do half and half.

Let your slushes set up for about ten minutes or so.

Now, prep your glasses. Place 1/4 cup of blueberries and 1 oz. of vodka in the bottom of each glass. Retrieve your slushes from the freezer. Pour white slush slowly over the blueberry layer about halfway up the cup. Then slowly pour your red slush over the top of that. Garnish, take a few Instagram photos while it’s still separated, then give it a healthy stir and drink up.

And you know we had to get a patriotic chicken in at least one pic.
