Spiced Summer Strawberry Spritz

When Rooster Rojo Tequila reached out for me to try their new Tequila Ahumado in a cocktail, it seemed like a pretty good little brand synergy, wouldn’t you say? Not only was it a no-brainer because: CHICKENS….and also because: TEQUILA, but furthermore, I was very, very curious to try this interesting-sounding smoked reposado variation. You read the word ‘smoked’ and you immediately think: mezcal. But no—it isn’t like that. This is a mellow, warm tequila that has the loveliest notes of smoke in both the aroma and the taste.
I knew, right off the bat, I wanted to put this lovely tequila into a summertime spritz. And strawberries seemed like a pretty good move. AND, if you want to get extra fancy and spend a little bit more time on this drink (or if you just happen to be making this drink at a summer BBQ), throw those strawberries on the grill and get some char on them. It’s a little bit more effort, but dang is it goooooood.
You might be wondering where you, too, can get your hands on a bottle of the Ahumado. Click here to buy. You won’t be sorry.
This is a really simple drink to whip up for any summer gathering. Pre-make the syrup and store it in the fridge, or use your favorite store-bought syrup to make it even easier.
Spiced Summer Strawberry Spritz
MAKES ONE SERVING
COCKTAIL INGREDIENTS
3 oz. dry sparkling rosé
1 oz. Cinnamon Simple Syrup
3 strawberries, greens removed, quartered
sliced strawberries + edible blossoms for garnish
SYRUP INGREDIENTS
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
2 cinnamon sticks
INSTRUCTIONS
To make the simple syrup: bring all ingredients to a boil over medium high heat. Lower heat and simmer for 5 minutes, making sure sugar is dissolved. Allow to cool, then strain into an airtight container and store in fridge for up to a month.
To make the cocktail: start by prepping a wine glass with layers of ice and sliced strawberries.
In the bottom of a cocktail shaker, thoroughly muddle quartered strawberries. Add ice, simple syrup, and tequila. Shake until chilled and double-strain into your prepared glass. Top with sparkling wine, and garnish.
NOTES
If you want to take it up a notch and grill your strawberries, cut them in half and string them on bamboo skewers (skewers should be soaked in water for about 15 minutes prior to grilling). Place skewered strawberries cut side directly onto the grill and let them cook for about 5 minutes or until they’ve got some sear marks on them. Allow to cool before using.
