Garden Gin Cosmo
When the sweet folks at Powell & Mahoney send you a box of their all-natural cocktail mixers…you immediately make pretty drinks with them. Especially when you’ve got friends in from out of town who expect, nay, demand to have a drink or two with your chickens. Not you. Your chickens.
So I grabbed a few things from the garden, and that gorgeous bottle of Powell & Mahoney Cosmopolitan Mix, and got to work.
To make one Garden Gin Cosmo:
- 2 oz. cosmo mix
- 1.5 oz. gin (we love this one, if you haven’t noticed)
- .5 oz. purple basil simple syrup (instructions to below)
- 1 oz. fresh-squeezed lime juice
- 5 dashes lavender bitters
- a tiny bouquet of edible flowers and herbs for garnish
To make your purple basil simple syrup, combine a half cup granulated sugar with a half cup water in a saucepan. On high heat, let sugar completely dissolve as you bring the mixture to a boil. When the sugar is dissolved, toss in one cup of fresh purple basil leaves. Turn heat off, cover saucepan, and let mixture cool and marinate for about an hour. Strain mixture into a jar and store in fridge until ready to use.
Combine all ingredients (except garnish) in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well, and strain into a coupe or martini glass. Garnish with a tiny bouquet (here I used purple basil, lavender blooms, celosia plumes, and purslane blossoms, tied off with baker’s twine).
The best kind of friends are the ones who tolerate having a chicken on their shoulder while they drink fancy cocktails.
