Margarita Estrellita

Here’s a festive little marg that is perfect for serving up during the holidays—especially if you can get your hands on some starfruit. There’s something pretty magical about those star-shaped slices bobbing around in your drink. Especially when those slices have been soaked in tequila.

Speaking of magical, this beautiful new El Mayor Tequila Añejo Cristalino is really something to behold. El Mayor starts with their golden añejo tequila (aged a minimum of 12 months in white oak barrels) and filter it through ultra-fine charcoal to get this crystal-clear, yet aged, finished spirit. What results is an incredible manifestation of two tequila expressions: you get the complexity of an añejo juxtaposed with the bright, clean notes and color of a blanco. And it’s a dang pretty bottle, too.

I highly, highly recommend starting with soaking some starfruit slices in this tequila. And if you can’t find starfruit, might I suggest pears? And might I also suggest you cut said pears into adorable star shapes? HUMOR ME.

A day in advance, slice up one whole starfruit (or pear), and throw them in a jar with a cup of Cristalino tequila. Seal the jar, and let it sit, at least, overnight. Or a couple of days at most. You can even use the infused tequila as your base in this cocktail.

MARGARITA ESTRELLITA

Makes one serving…but multiple everything by 8 and mix in a bowl and you’ve got a pretty great batch recipe CUZ: HOLIDAYS.

  • 1-1/2 ounces El Mayor Cristalino (or use the starfruit-infused version)

  • 1 ounce pomegranate juice

  • 1 ounce lime juice

  • 1/2 ounce Cinnamon Starfruit Syrup (directions below)

    • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

    • 1/2 cup water

    • 1/2 starfruit sliced

    • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 1 ounce orange liqueur (such as Cointreau)

  • 3 tequila-soaked starfruit slices

  • 1 fresh starfruit slice + 1 lime slice for garnish + a pinch of fresh pomegranate arils (seeds)

  • 1 tablespoon coarse sea salt for rim

To make the Cinnamon Starfruit Syrup:

Place all ingredients in a small saucepan and bring to a boil over medium high heat, stirring occasionally until sugar is fully dissolved. Lower heat and simmer for five minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool, then strain into an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to two weeks.

To make the Margarita:

First prepare your glass. Place salt on a small plate, and run a lime slice around the edge of your glass, then dip the glass in the salt to rim. Now fill your glass with ice and several tequila-soaked starfruit slices. Set aside. In a shaker with ice, add tequila, pom juice, lime juice, syrup, and orange liqueur. Shake until chilled and strain into prepared glass. Garnish with a fresh starfruit slice and lime slice.

We’re all pretty starry-eyed over here for this gorgeous El Mayor Cristalino tequila (it would make such a lovely hostess gift at your next holiday gathering!). Although some of us are more starry-eyed for the glittery star props used in this shoot because some of us are easily distracted by shiny objects.
