Wine Tasting with Hahn Family Wines...and Chickens

We love any excuse to gather our friends in the garden under the party lights and get our ankles pecked by cranky chickens (I meeeeeanwho doesn’t love that?). But by far one of the best reasons to gather and drink with chickens was our recent opportunity to sample a selection of beautiful Hahn Family Wines.

Firstly, let’s just make note of the fact that “Hahn” is the German word for rooster, and the winery’s emblem is, of course, a rooster. So really, this entire evening was the manifestation of what was clearly a predetermined destiny that we were all powerless to resist. Plus, there was charcuterie. Why fight it?

The Hahn Family has been cultivating wine for nearly 35 years in the Santa Lucia Highlands region of California, and pride themselves on not only creating superior products, but in doing so sustainably. In fact, they have achieved the SIP (Sustainable in Practice) Certification; a rigorous set of standards that encompass soil and water conservation, energy efficiency, natural pest control methods (they utilize raptors to help control pests, which is just SO VERY COOL), and health and safety measures for all employees. This is an impressive company and family making some truly phenomenal wines. Read more about them here and here.

An abundance of charcuterie boards and florals always make for a pretty table. Then just add wine.

Corn considers how far of a leap it is to the middle of the cheese plate.

So while we were nibbling on charcuterie and fending off interloping chickens, we got to sample from a line up of the family’s Hahn brand classically-styled varietals (plus their one fabulous blend), and learn about the Hahn family, the Monterey-based winery, and, of course, the wines themselves. The fruit-forward Hahn brand includes a Chardonnay, a Pinot Gris, a Pinot Noir, a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Merlot, and that beautiful GSM (a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre). We were also fortunate enough to taste the Pinot Gris from their Hahn SLH line (I don’t like to play favorites, but this was definitely one of my favs).

That SLH (Santa Lucia Highlands, which is the wine-growing region where the grapes are grown) Pinot Gris, tho.

It’s true what they say: Chardonnay DOES go well with chickens.

This collection was so dang perfect for a bit of tasting with all our friends. From the robust Cabernet to the crisp Pinot Gris—there was something perfect for everyone’s palate. It was just such a good excuse to get together.

Even a few of our littlest chickens got to stretch their wings for a photo opportunity.

Hahn wines are available to buy not only through their website, but also can be found at leading retailers and fine wine shops around the country, such as Safeway (Vons and Pavilions in Southern California), Kroger, Publix, Total Wine & More, BevMo, and more.

Princess Vespa does not respond to flattery.

It was a truly magical evening filled with good wine, food, friends, and…surly chickens. IT’S A PERFECT FORMULA.
