Black Magic Blood & Sand
Mmmmmmkay, time for some Halloweeny cocktails, allrighty??
I’ve always loved the traditional Blood & Sand cocktail (such a perfectly morbid name), which consists of equal parts scotch whisky, sweet vermouth, orange juice, and cherry liqueur. I figured we could amp up the darkness of this delightful cocktail with some crème de mure, some dry red wine, and a little touch of absinthe which always feels like a spooky addition to me. IDKW. Just seems like something that should be sitting in vial on the top shelf in a witch’s kitchen. And speaking of witches…let’s put a tiny black hat on a not-so-tiny black chicken. ARE YOU SCARED YET?!!!
BLACK MAGIC BLOOD & SAND
Makes one serving.
1 ounce scotch
1 ounce sweet vermouth
1 ounce fresh orange juice
1/2 ounce crème de mure (Blackberry liqueur)
1 ounce dry red wine
1/4 ounce absinthe
Garnish: 1 apple slice cut into a star shape + 1 blackberry, dipped in edible glitter
In a cocktail shaker with ice, add whisky, vermouth, orange juice, and blackberry liqueur. Shake until chilled. Prep your glass by adding the absinthe to it, rolling the liquid around to coat the sides of the glass, and then dumping the excess. Now strain your cocktail mixture into said glass. Pour red wine over the back of a spoon onto the top of the drink (this creates a cool float layer that didn’t really show up in the photos but just trust me on this). Or just dump it in. Who cares. Garnish with a star-shaped apple slice and a blackberry, both dipped in edible glitter CUZ WHY NOT. That grumpy chicken-witch is putting a hex on you anyways so you might as well throw some glitter around.
